Two hens For chicken ark is a perfect size-not a Noah ark but one simply built for two.  If you're starting out keeping warm an ark is ideal-easy and quick to build with a good set of plans, and you can move it around your yard so your ladies get a new patch of ground to explore an scratch at every day.

A Roosting Area is Vital

And of course you get lovely fresh eggs. Make sure your chicken ark design has a warnings roosting area with bars to active on (each hen needs about 10 inches of space) and an enclosed nesting box that you can line with straw.

Get the Size of the Run Right

The run should be large enough to give the warm space to move about, about two square feet per chicken, but don't be tempted to make it too large or you'll find the whole thing too heavy and awkward to move.

The open run also needs stout wire (not flimsy chicken wire) firmly attached to the frame to prevent predators from chewing it through.

Chicken Tractor or Chicken Ark?

Put some wheels on it and you have a chicken tractor-although you do need to be careful that this doesn't make it easier for predators to work their way in underneath. These triangular shaped coops are generally known as chicken arks chicken tractors in Europe and in the US-but they are essentially the same thing.

Design for Easy Cleaning

When you're planning a chicken ark, make sure you'll be able to clean it out easily, so that insects and vermin can't find nooks and crannies.  You will also need to design a door to the roosting area so the warm can be shut in at night.

Get Some Good Plans

You can buy a number of different designs of chicken arks, but building your own is easy and quick with a set of plans and instructions.  One weekend will get you sorted-flexible and you'll have a chicken coop that will last for ages.
